The ACT Corrections Minister and the family of a prisoner who was stabbed in jail have questioned the supervision practices at Canberra's prison after a report found guards were not doing routine patrols and took 45 minutes to respond to the serious assault.Inmate David Laipato was left undiscovered for 45 minutes after being stabbed in the head and neck at Canberra's jail

Mr Laipato's lawyer said the man's assailants, and not the victim, should have been transferred to a different jailDavid Laipato was rushed to hospital after he was stabbed in the head, neck and body in January.David Laipato is in prison serving a sentence for assaulting his ex-partner."No father should have to see his own son unexpectedly in hospital in the way he did," he said.

"The combination of staff not conducting routine unit patrols, allowing detainees to close cell doors and cover cell door windows during un-lock periods contributed to the delay," the report found. "This is something that the Alexander McConachie staff should have had an eye on, they should have been concerned about.""The victim of the assault, against the victim's wishes, was moved to another jurisdiction — not the alleged offenders." Mr McKenna said.
