The move has left women's hockey players wondering about the future of their game
CWHL chair Lauren Walzak said Sunday the league needs more revenue. But Hefford was emphatic the CWHL is done even if more money comes in from a last-minute source.The NHL and the U.S.-based NWHL are the prime candidates to step into the breach.The NHL owns the rights to the trademark"WNHL."
"We had an excellent meeting with the CWHL in January where we presented significant proposals to them about forming one league, and we agreed to meet again in April," Rylan said."The NWHL wants to assure the players, fans, staff and supporters that our season is confirmed to start in October. The CWHL began paying its players salaries in 2017-18 ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, out of a total budget of $3.7 million.
The CWHL lost a financial backer in November. Graeme Roustan of the venture capital firm Roustan Capital withdrew his financial support citing a lack of transparency regarding board expenses.
