News reports at the time said Hartin initially maintained that superintendent Henry Jemmott was shot by someone in a passing boat, changing her tune only when police threatened to charge her with cocaine possession.

“At some point he said, ‘Let’s see if you’ve improved your gun skills’,” Hartin reportedly told cops. “I picked up the gun and tried to eject the magazine clip, but it was stuck,” added Hartin. “I struggled with it, trying to get the magazine out, when the gun suddenly went off. I had no idea it still had a bullet in the chamber.”Article content

The Ashcroft family has since reportedly tried to distance itself from Hartin. The Sun reported on Monday that Hartin had receivedat the prison, a report that the prison CEO described to 7 News Belize as “accurate.” Jemmott is described by the outlet as “troubled,” having reportedly taken five days off his job for “personal reasons” and time away from his family.Article content
