Ottawa trucker pleads no contest, sentenced to 2 1/2 years for child luring
Matthew Marchand was sentenced this week to 36 months in a Florida prison after he was found guilty of soliciting a child for sex using an electronic device and two counts of transmitting material harmful to a minor. Marchand pleaded no contest to the charges on Wednesday and was convicted and sentenced the same day by Judge R. Lee Smith. Marchand was also ordered to pay more than $8,000 in fines and various court fees.
He was a common presence on news channels, talking about his experiences trucking when borders, restaurants and even washrooms were shut down by COVID-19. He was active on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and has tweeted more than 18,000 times from his @myworldtaw account to his more than 8,000 followers. The accounts have been deleted.
A graphic account of those communications was entered into the court records. In it, Marchand asked the undercover officer how old she is. The officer replies: “13.”
