Summer McIntosh, Rebecca Smith, Kayla Sanchez and Penny Oleksiak swam hard. But the foursome didn’t make it to the podium in the women’s 4x200-meter relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, coming in fourth in a nail-biter of a race.

Despite knocking a half second off the Canadian record, the team finished fourth behind a world record setting performance by the Chinese gold medal winning quartet.

While the near miss was a disappointment, Oleksiak will have another opportunity to make Canadian history on Thursday when she defends her gold medal from 2016 in the 100-meter freestyle.Article content Oleksiak was third in her semi in a time of 52.86, as she was clearly conserving energy for the relay, which was contested less than two hours later.

The Toronto swimmer looks determined to match or surpass that performance in her Olympic debut with two medals in Tokyo already and a shot at much more, including Thursday’s 100 freestyle final.Article content
