Denny Morrison and Gilmore Junio 's friendship continues to shine brightly, years after Junio's selfless act at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Morrison, a decorated Canadian speed skater, had fallen during trials, missing his chance to compete in the 1,000-meter event. Junio, who had qualified, was approached by coaches about giving up his spot for Morrison. Without hesitation, Junio agreed, paving the way for Morrison's silver medal finish in the event.
On Saturday, at Calgary's Olympic Oval, Morrison celebrated his career with a banner raising ceremony during World Cup racing. He also announced an award and a $2,500 bursary in Junio's name, honoring his exceptional sportsmanship and teammate qualities. Morrison, who has since retired from competitive skating and is now a 39-year-old medical student at the University of Alberta, spoke about the enduring impact of their shared experience. 'I think this solidifies our friendship even more and it’s something I don’t think either one of us will ever forget,' Morrison said. The two men have maintained a close bond since Sochi, even developing a signature greeting, a high-five with a fist pump they called “The GilMorrison.” Morrison's career highlights include a bronze medal in the 1,500 meters at Sochi, team pursuit gold in Vancouver in 2010, and team pursuit silver in Turin in 2006. He is tied with Gaetan Boucher for the most Olympic speedskating medals earned by a Canadian man with four.
