Researchers examining online reactions to the indictment of two Canadians accused of participating in a Kremlin-backed influence campaign found that Canadian social media users are prone to making partisan conclusions based on heightened awareness of foreign interference. The study, conducted by the Canadian Digital Media Research Network (CDMRN), focused on Tenet Media, a far-right online outlet, and found it to be aligning content with Russian objectives of sowing distrust and division, though no direct influence on Canadian politicians was identified. The indictment against the two Canadians, allegedly funnelling money from Russia Today (RT) to propagate Kremlin talking points, sparked widespread discussion and fueled existing political divides.
Armed with newfound awareness about foreign interference, Canadian social media users have demonstrated a pattern of leaping to conclusions for partisan purposes, according to researchers examining the online response to the recent indictment of two Canadians accused of participating in an alleged Kremlin-backed influence campaign.
Aengus Bridgman, Media Ecosystem Observatory director and lead on the report's analytical work, told The Hill Times there has been a marked improvement in Canadians' awareness of foreign interference in the past number of years. Unfortunately, people are using that awareness against their political opponents, and distracting from the more sophisticated discussions required to address it.
