“[I’m] getting messages from young people saying they’ve never seen a trans person in sports before,” Quinn told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. after the 1-0 victory. “Athletics is the most exciting part of my life. . . . The hope, Quinn wrote, was “to be visible to queer folks who don’t see people like them on their feed. I know it saved my life years ago. I want to challenge cis folks to be better allies. It’s a process, and I know it won’t be perfect, but if I can encourage you to start, then it’s something.”Article contentAs the Olympics were beginning, Quinn was filled with hope that attitudes toward trans people, particularly those in sports, will rapidly evolve.

“I feel optimistic for change,” they wrote on Instagram. “Change in legislature. Changes in rules, structures, and mindsets. Mostly, I feel aware of the realities. Trans girls being banned from sports. Trans women facing discrimination and bias while trying to pursue their Olympic dreams. The fight isn’t close to over. . . and I’ll celebrate when we’re all here.”
