Two men convicted of storming a vacation home and shooting and rendering a Calgary man a paraplegic have been sentenced to 31 years in prison by a judge in Barbados.
But with time already served in remand and taking into consideration their guilty pleas, the men will have just short of 19 years left to serve for wounding Ken Elliott on Feb. 22, 2020.
“Any punishment . . . must be such that it strongly deters persons from contemplating and taking part in such crime. As a court, the sentences we impose must be so severe as to deter would-be perpetrators from targeting our locals and foreign tourists,” Smith-Bovell said in her decision.Article content
In the struggle that ensued, Elliott, now 67, was shot once in the shoulder with the bullet lodging in his spine, while his brother fought off the attackers with a machete.The couple had arrived inon Feb. 17 of that year and planned to stay until March 9 for what was to be a family reunion vacation.Article content
“During those 16 years , I’m still going to live with this disability and will continue to have this disability after they’re released and until my death,” he said.
