Richmond, B.C. race walker tackles disappointment with humour and reflection

Canada’s most accomplished race walker is back home in Richmond, B.C., nursing a case of COVID-19 he caught on the return trip from the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary — where he also picked up two fourth-place finishes and a torn left hamstring. His COVID symptoms aren’t terrible, but the hamstring might be bad enough to keep him out of the Pan Am Games in Chile in October.

That’s a healthy perspective gained well after the initial fourth-place finish in the 20km race walk, and it was not immediately evident when he crossed the line in the 35km, having torn his hamstring three kilometres earlier. The pain of the injury and the frustration of another oh-so-close finish were writ large on his face.

The logical next step in his mind was on the podium in the 35km — because he prefers the longer distances — and in fact he set his sights on the top step.“That’s what I had dreamed of as a kid, winning a race against the best in the world,” he said.“Apparently it’s quite bad. Recovery looks like it’s going to be in the months, not weeks,” he said. “I’m proud to know I pushed through that tremendous amount of pain and got to that finish line.
