Canadian Premiers meet in Ottawa to address the looming threat of 25 percent tariffs on imported goods by Donald Trump. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe emphasizes the need to engage with Trump's rhetoric seriously and work towards preventing tariffs. He also highlights the importance of a strong federal mandate for negotiations with the Trump administration.

As Canada anticipates Donald Trump 's return to the White House, premiers from across the country will convene in Ottawa this week to address the looming threat of a 25 percent tariff on imported goods. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe acknowledges that while tariffs remain a strong possibility, Canada must approach Trump's rhetoric with seriousness. 'It's on us to continue to take those words of President-elect Trump very seriously and work toward that not happening.

But if it should happen, ensure that we are doing our level best to have them lifted as soon as possible,' Moe stated.Over the weekend, meetings took place between President-elect Trump, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, and businessman Kevin O'Leary. Moe highlights that one of Trump's key priorities is strengthening border security, an area where Canadian and American interests converge. 'Ultimately, that's both ways — enhanced North American security. That's an easy win and a positive conversation for us to have,' Moe emphasized.Premiers are taking a proactive stance against potential U.S. tariffs, engaging with American audiences directly. The Saskatchewan government will announce its plan to bolster security measures at the Saskatchewan-U.S. border on Tuesday. Moe notes that Canada has already committed $1.3 billion to border security but stresses the need for coordinated efforts between provincial and federal governments. 'Where does $1.3 billion go? Can the federal government and provincial initiatives align? Those are the conversations we need to have now,' Moe stated. He also expresses concern about retaliatory tariffs and their potential to fracture Canada's economy and unity. Moe unequivocally opposes any export tariffs or restrictions on Canadian goods, deeming it 'the most divisive situation' Canada could face. He emphasizes that a strong federal mandate is crucial for effective negotiations with Trump's administration. 'At the end of the day, we're going to need a prime minister with a mandate that's going to be able to bring that same level of discussion to the president,' Moe asserted. He advocates for a swift federal election 'sooner rather than later' to empower Canadians to provide that mandate. 'The strength of North America is how we create energy security, food security, manufacturing security, and general security as well,' he concluded
