Quebec-based pilots are lending a hand in the fight against devastating wildfires raging across Los Angeles, facing extreme turbulence and challenging conditions.
Quebec-based pilots are battling high winds and heavy turbulence as they fight massive wildfires tearing through the Los Angeles area. Pascal Duclos, head pilot for the Quebec government's aerial service, said he spent several hours in the air on Tuesday, dumping dozens of loads of water over fire-devastated areas. He described seeing houses and cars engulfed in flames, people desperately trying to save their homes, and firefighters working tirelessly to contain the blazes.
Duclos, who has been travelling to L.A. for 14 years, says extreme dryness and winds have created fast-moving flames and intense turbulence that have pushed their planes to the limit. He also noted the intense situation on the ground with numerous aircraft refilling and people fleeing the flames. Canadian-made water bombers from the Quebec government and helicopters from B.C.-based Coulson Aviation are among the aircraft battling the fires. Thousands of firefighters are tackling multiple blazes that have killed at least two people and destroyed more than 1,000 structures across the Los Angeles area. Canadians, including Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida and his family, are among the more than 70,000 people forced to evacuate their homes
