The House of Commons concluded its 2024 session with lingering uncertainty due to Chrystia Freeland's cabinet resignation and calls for a change in leadership.
The 2024 chapter of the House of Commons has officially come to a close, ending on an unsettled note as questions still swirl over Chrystia Freeland quitting cabinet, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ’s leadership, and the government’s border response. On Dec. 17, the House adjourned for the holidays until Jan. 27, 2025. However, the fallout from the previous day’s chaos over Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland (University-Rosedale, Ont.
) bombshell resignation from cabinet still lingered in the halls, with Liberal MPs facing down the barrel of even more than the usual number of media microphones and cameras upon entering Parliament. Liberal MP Wayne Long says PM Trudeau is 'living in a false reality.' The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade “The prime minister is living in a false reality. He’s delusional if he thinks he can continue like this,” said Liberal MP Wayne Long (Saint John—Rothesay, N.B.) to reporters on Dec. 17 in a scrum upon entering the West Block’s south entrance. “It’s unfair to us as MPs. It’s unfair to the ministers, and, most importantly, it’s unfair to the country. We need to move on with a new direction.” There were cameras outside the West Block’s west entrance, too. “Do you still have confidence in Trudeau?” asked a reporter. “Yes, I do,” said Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan (Vancouver South, B.C.) as he made his way inside Parliament. Liberals also couldn’t dodge the press across the street in the Wellington Building where some House committees were being held. “We lost the B.C. byelection by 50 points yesterday. We lost , we lost , and I think all of these are clear indicators the Liberal Party will do far better in another election with a different leader,” said Liberal MP Anthony Housefather (Mount Royal, Que.) to reporters outside the House Ethics Committee room where he referenced the Liberals' Dec. 16 bylection loss to the Conservatives in Cloverdale-Langley City, B.C
