Fireweed owner/operator Craig Chapman, who opened the hostel in 2006, said the closure is a blow to the community of Field
“Every summer we were booked solid with travellers and hikers on the Great Divide Trail, and in the winter we were booked out with groups of ice climbers and backcountry skiers,” he said, adding he wanted to create a quality, affordable property for Canadians seeking adventure in Yoho National Park.Chapman said the railway is ending the lease because it wants to use the land for rail purposes.
Canadian Pacific Railway owns almost one-third of the land in the village of Field, according to Parks Canada. Debra Huntington, a guide with the company that operates out of Colorado, said the closure of the Fireweed means an entire tour will likely be cancelled and that visiting Field in the future is not an option.
Now, because of the closure and no alternatives for accommodation in the village, their Canadian Rockies hiking holiday package will need to be changed.Article content continued
