Hughes was the early clubhouse leader and ended the day tied for fifth, two shots back of Collin Morikawa, J.J. Spaun and Jon Rahm.
Kapalua is usually one of the most windswept layouts the PGA Tour plays each year, but it was uncharacteristically calm on Thursday and Hughes was able to take advantage.
Hughes shot a 4-under 32 for his first nine holes, including an eagle on the par-5 9th, before adding four more birdies on the back nine. The only blemish on his card was a bogey on the par-4 13th. Hughes told The Star prior to the tournament that, after the birth of his and wife Jenna’s third child in early December, he barely had any time to play or practice. He has a home gym and a net set up in his garage.
