Leylah Fernandez rode the emotion of a packed house at IGA Stadium to a 7\u002D5 5\u002D7, 6\u002D3 victory over 11th\u002Dseeded Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.
The 20-year-old from Laval, Que. kept the loud partisan fans on the edge of their seats for two hours and 55 minutes as she advanced to the Round of 16. Her next opponent will be American qualifier Danielle Collins, who upset eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece, 6-4, 6-2.Fernandez has never played Collins but she said she expected to face “one tough cookie” on centre court at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Canadian contributed to her demise in that portion of the match with three unforced errors.
Top-seeded Iga Swiatek overcame the wind and a formidable opponent to win her first match.
