Canadian political and business leaders are voicing their concerns over the potential imposition of a 25% tariff on products imported from Canada by the Trump administration. They highlight the mutual economic damage that could ensue and the impact on worker and job security in both Canada and the U.S.
Business and political leaders in Canada are expressing concerns over Donald Trump 's plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all goods imported from Canada , Mexico, and other countries. The president-elect posted on Truth Social that he will sign an executive order to impose the tariff, which will remain until illegal drug and people trafficking from Canada and Mexico are halted.
Beth Burke, CEO of the Canadian American Business Council, warned that the proposal would hurt businesses on both sides of the border and weaken North America's economic and geopolitical strength. Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, and other provincial leaders commented that such a tariff would be devastating for workers and jobs in both Canada and the U.S., with significant economic costs estimated at US$125 billion annually in the U.S. and around CAD$30 billion in Canada. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged the Trump administration's concerns but noted that the vast majority of Alberta’s energy exports to the U.S. are delivered through secure pipelines
