Protesters have called for an end to Canadian COVID-19 vaccine mandates for the last several weeks. So-called “freedom convoys” traveled to the Canadian capital to demand the removal of mandates for truckers who cross the border, though officials say 90% of truck drivers have been vaccinated. Attorneys representing the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, city of Windsor and Ottawa Attorney General argued the demonstration hurt business, closed down factories and disrupted essential government services
Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared a state of emergency Friday, threatening fines and jail sentences for people who block border crossings and major transportation infrastructure. Whitmer also criticized Republicans for “inciting and encouraging people to break the law.” Throughout the rest of the day, Republican elected officials and candidates for offices in 2022 rallied behind the protesters and echoed calls to end vaccine mandates.
