The Hill Times
Dec. 16, 2021, was a day of celebration for animal-protection advocates and horse lovers across the country. That day, newly re-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mandated that the minister of agriculture ban the export of horses for slaughter overseas, signalling his government’s intention to follow through on the Liberal Party’s hugely popular election campaign commitment. Finally, the sun appeared to be setting on this cruel and shameful practice.
The situation is shameful as well for Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, whose Senate representatives have a history of using delay tactics to kill private members’ bills. Predictably, this history is now repeating itself with Bill C-355. Numerous Senators have spoken in support of the legislation, including a particularly moving speech by newly appointed Manitoba Senator Charles Adler.
