Canadian Geographic announces the winners of its annual Canadian Photos of the Year competition, showcasing the best photography capturing the beauty and essence of Canada in 2024.
On Wednesday, Canadian Geographic announced the winners of its prestigious 2024 Canadian Photos of the Year competition. The competition celebrates the work of 14 exceptional photographers who have captured the essence of Canada through their stunning images in 2024. Shane Turgeon , hailing from Edmonton and Pincher Creek, Alberta, was crowned the Canadian Geographic Canadian Photographer of the Year 2024.
His winning photograph showcases the Milky Way rising majestically above the abandoned Utopia School, an old one-room schoolhouse built in 1904. Turgeon's journey into photography began in 2012 following a personal crisis. He shared, 'It scared the hell out of me, and in the process of that, I discovered photography.' The 47-year-old photographer explained, 'We're constantly chasing the light, figuratively and literally, because, in life or photography, we want that light in our life.' Another captivating image from Turgeon features an intense eye-to-eye encounter with a grizzly bear in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta. This profound moment, he describes, highlights the interconnectedness of all living beings. 'You understand that we are all deeply interconnected,' Turgeon said. 'That we are all a part of nature. That we all require a clean environment and have a need for a safe existence.'The competition also recognized other talented photographers. Stuart White of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, won for his photograph of two playful red fox kits tumbling in the dirt of Bonavista. Meanwhile, Rain Saulnier of Calgary received an honourable mention for capturing Atlantic puffins near Elliston, Newfoundland and Labrador. Matthew Littlewood of Banff, Alberta, was the runner-up in the Outdoor Adventure category for his image of the Dome Glacier on the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. Peter O'Hara of Canmore, Alberta, earned an honourable mention in the Weather, Seasons, and Skies category with his photograph of the mesmerizing Northern Lights dancing over Vermillion Lakes in Banff National Park. The competition was judged by a panel of esteemed professionals, including Christian Fleury, Jenny Wong, Scott Forsyth, Ryan Tidman, and members of the magazine's editorial and design teams.
