Lewis Irving, a Canadian freestyle skier, secures his first World Cup podium finish in two years with a silver medal in men's aerials at a home event in Lac-Beauport, Quebec. Irving's successful performance comes after a challenging period marked by injuries and positions him well for Olympic qualification in 2026.
Canadian freestyle skier Lewis Irving landed on the World Cup podium for the first time in two years, securing a silver medal in men's aerials at a home event in Lac-Beauport , Quebec, on Saturday. The 29-year-old from Quebec City impressed with a score of 102.50 points in the super final at Le Relais ski resort, trailing only gold medalist Qi Guangpu of China (124.00) and bronze medalist Christopher Lillis of the United States (85.40).
This victory marked Irving's return to the podium since his bronze medal win at a World Cup event in Ruka, Finland, in December 2022.Irving's success was particularly sweet after a challenging two years marked by numerous injuries. He acknowledged the risk he took by attempting a difficult quintuple-twist jump in the super final, even though it resulted in a fall. 'We took a risk, went all-in with a quintuple twist in the super final,' he said with a wide smile. 'I tried it, and even though I didn’t stick the landing, it shows it was the right decision. I didn’t come here to aim for second or third, so that’s why I went for it.' He added, 'Last year was pretty tough, especially coming back from injuries and all. I’m really happy to get a podium this early in the season, it gives me energy for the rest of the year.'Irving's performance puts him in a strong position to secure his spot at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. He could qualify with another podium finish on Sunday. 'While some say they’re not thinking about (Olympic qualification), I am. I know full well the ultimate goal is to score a hat trick at the Olympics,' he stated, referring to his bronze medal win in the mixed team event at the Beijing Olympics in 2022. 'One step down, and I’ll go for the second tomorrow (Sunday).' Meanwhile, fellow Quebec City skier Alexandre Duchaine placed fifth with 78.28 points. In the women's aerials qualifying round, Marion Thénault of Sherbrooke, Quebec, unfortunately fell short of a spot in the final, placing 13th after being hampered by a recent virus and a knee injury sustained during qualifications last week in Lake Placid, New York.
