Tara Marie Murphy shares how she traded the high cost of living in Toronto for a more affordable and fulfilling lifestyle in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. She discusses the advantages of living in Mexico, including lower costs, accessible healthcare, and a welcoming community.

One Canadian finance professional, Tara Marie Murphy, has traded the bustling city of Toronto for the coastal paradise of Playa del Carmen, Mexico . Driven by a desire for a more affordable lifestyle and an aversion to Canada 's harsh winters and traffic, Murphy embarked on a relocation journey four years ago with her boyfriend, a professional golfer. Now, they split their time between Mexico and Canada .

Murphy, who boasts a diverse portfolio of work experiences including investment banking, day trading, cryptocurrency investments, teaching financial literacy, running a digital marketing agency, and managing Airbnb properties, found that Mexico offered the perfect blend of affordability, opportunity, and a welcoming community. Her decision to relocate wasn't solely based on financial factors. She was drawn to the city's proximity to golf courses, its walkable downtown, and its vibrant culture. After initially planning a four-month trial period, Murphy and her boyfriend fell in love with Playa del Carmen and decided to make it their permanent home. They rented out their Toronto properties, stored their belongings, and embraced the change. While adjusting to a new language and culture presented some challenges, Murphy found the overall experience to be immensely rewarding. She highlighted the affordability of living in Mexico, the accessibility of quality healthcare, and the warmth of the local community as some of the biggest advantages. The average cost of renting a one-bedroom condo in Canada is $2,014, while in Toronto, it's $2,372. In contrast, Murphy and her boyfriend rent a two-story penthouse loft with an ocean view in Centro Playa, the heart of the city, for $2,100. Healthcare costs are also significantly lower. Bloodwork costs $100 or less, and a specialist consultation costs just $50. Murphy emphasized the convenience of her healthcare experience in Mexico, noting that she can communicate with her doctor via WhatsApp and schedule appointments easily. She believes Mexico offers an exceptional quality of life and has become her happy and safe haven
