Demining teams put donated equipment to use, but clearance efforts are complicated by the introduction of Western cluster munitions.

“Since the war’s onset, SES pyrotechnic units have diffused 405,107 explosive devices, including 3,433 aircraft bombs, and surveyed over 90,596 hectares,” an SES representative said.

The equipment and support from Canada have come at a critical time. “The transferred technical means and demining equipment significantly increase the safety of pyrotechnics while performing their assigned tasks,” the representative said, citing the GCS-200s and EOD-9 heavy protective demining suits as particularly useful.

“Canadian experts are currently organizing a training process for trainers who will be able to pass on their knowledge and skills to other young professionals,” the SES representative added. Despite receiving so much international support, the SES faces an uphill battle. Exacerbating the nation’s unexploded ordnance crisis is the fact that the United States has recently approved the provision of cluster munitions to the Ukrainian side. The Biden administration insists it is a crucial step in the path to victory, and that Ukraine has pledged to employ the explosives judiciously.

Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security adviser, said the United States will distribute a version of the weapon that has a lower rate of undetonated bomblets.
