Damian Warner and fellow Canadian Pierce LePage lead the field after three events
As the 22-man decathlon field took a break to rest and refuel for two more events on Wednesday evening — the high jump and 400-metres — Warner led with 2,966 points. Better yet, the man in the silver medal spot, just 193 points back, was 25-year-old Pierce LePage of Whitby, Ont.Australian Ashley Moloney was giving LePage a run, jump and throw for his money, and occupied the bronze medal position with 2,741 points.
“I couldn’t ask for a better start to this decathlon and I’ve just got to keep executing and keep competing and hopefully we’ll get the result we’re looking for,” Warner told CBC following the shot put. “Out of the three events that I did today, that one was the lowest point value but I think it’s the one that I’m happiest about because all year shot put has kind of been inconsistent for me.”
At Gotzis, Warner ran 10.14 seconds in the 100m for 1,062 points, long jumped 8.28 metres for 1,133 points and threw the shot 14.31 metres for 747 more, for a three-event total of 2,942.
