Just like in the good old days, the Vancouver Bach Choir teams up this month with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and a team of soloists to present that ultimate blockbuster, Carl Orff’s greatest hit, Carmina Burana.
De Souza hails from Toronto, but has worked in Europe for a good deal of his career. He is now branching out beyond European gigs, including a visit to the West Coast last fall to conduct Seattle Opera’s Tristan und Isolde.Article content “There are lots of boys in my immediate family, and we all attended church and sang in the choir,” he said during a January phone chat. “I still have a bit of tendinitis from when I was 11 and practising too hard. When I turned 12, they allowed me to conduct choir practice.”
He joined the Komische Oper Berlin in 2015. “I got promoted to Kappellmaster after my first year there. It was really a dream come true.” After a four-year stint, de Souza began working with other companies, including Garsington Opera, Bayerische Staatsope, Glyndebourne Festival, and Chicago Lyric Opera.
