The only thing Avery was thinking about when he saw Kenneth Cross, then 90 years old, struggling in the water was to get the man out safety. As reported in the Cape Breton Post, Avery was in Grade 11 when he rescued Cross after he fell off the dock in Marion Bridge. Avery was with his friend Josh Pezzereallo on a warm July day in 2018, jumping into the water off the bridge when Cross fell in the water.
One of Lisa Gale's friends worked there and told LeBlanc she knew how to get in touch with the Gales. She did and then put them in touch with LeBlanc who invited the Gales and the Pezzereallo families for a tour of the college. " you're the type of person that we would look for in the program," Avery recalls."You know, acting in the moment, taking action.
"That's the thing, a lot of people, from here especially, don't really know about the college," Avery said."It's like the best-kept secret." There are 37 graduates for 2024: 11 are females and 26 are males. In 2023, there were 40 graduates and in 2024 there were 51 grads, 42 of which were male.
