Canadian tennis sensation Bianca Andreescu roared into the quarterfinals of the U. S. Open in the early hours of Tuesday in New York, beating American Taylor Townsend in a nervous three-setter, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in almost two hours.
Share to twitterNEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 02: Bianca Andreescu of Canada hits a forehand against Taylor Townsend of the United States on Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 02, 2019 in New York City. I stay as positive as I can, I think the crowd can't beat me."Of course, Eugenie Bouchard has the best grand slam results of a Canadian female.
Bouchard, now 25, was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2014 and has twice been a semifinalist at a grand slam. She was also a quarterfinalist at the 2015 Australian Open. That quarterfinal appearance in Australia was the last time Bouchard was a major factor in tennis. She reached a career high No. 5 in the world, but injuries and a series of disappointing results have sent her spiraling out of the top 100 in the world.
Canadians, of course, hope that same rise to stardom enjoyed by Bouchard doesn't also have the same ill-fated consequences down the road for Andreescu. But it's important not to look too far ahead. Andreescu must focus on the now. And the now feels really good after having advanced to a grand slam quarterfinal for the first time in her young career.
"I've been working and dreaming of this moment for a really long time," Andreescu said."But the tournament's not done yet. I expect a lot for myself. This year has been the best year of my life so far."
