After a few weeks of introductory bargaining, Unifor usually selects one of the Big Three to negotiate with in order to set a pattern for the other carmakers to follow. On the launch day of talks, Payne said the union is considering Ford as its target and confirmed that again by phone. Unifor will announce which company it will tap around Labour Day, though a selection could come before Sept. 4.
