TORONTO, Ont. — Mixed media artist Howard J. Davis is putting the story of Portia White front and centre in his newest creation — an opera based on the life of the Truro-born contralto called
Instead, he wants to explore Portia as a person, as she sees herself coming to grips with her death as her soul, spirit, and body are separated in purgatory before she faces the afterlife. The family drew me in immediately. I met Sheila White, Portia's niece, back in 2018, and there was just something really magnetic about that family. At that moment, I can say it now: in retrospect, I was truly chosen. It felt like I was chosen to go on this journey, and it's a very out-of-body experience when you have those moments because I never would have thought that way.
So, I was in Ottawa, going through old film footage and books, just the archives, and that's how I stumbled upon Portia. It's so fascinating. I hated history when I was younger, but it's fascinating now, and it's a huge part of my creative process.I think a big part of it was just the social and political impact of being a Black woman at that time.
