The crash is the worst mass casualty event for Canadian citizens since the 1985 Air India bombing, which killed 268 Canadians
OTTAWA — As Iran’s aviation safety agency examines the crash of a Ukrainian airliner that killed at least 63 Canadians, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he’s confident Canada can play a “substantive” role in the investigation — despite having cut off diplomatic relations with Iran in 2012.
Under international rules, the country in which an airline crash occurred leads the investigation into the cause. Canada’s Transportation Safety Board says it will monitor the progress of the Iranian investigation, review the information made available, and offer technical assistance. . Transportation Minister Marc Garneau said data available to Canadian officials so far suggests the plane had a normal departure, but then something “very unusual” took place about two minutes after takeoff.
Poole also cautioned not to read too much into reports that the pilots didn’t issue a mayday distress call before the crash; that doesn’t necessarily mean the plane was shot down, he said. In his experience, pilots dealing with a catastrophic event are sometimes so desperately trying to fix it that they don’t make the call. “It’s just human nature, you go into survival mode,” he said.
