Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson warns that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump 's proposed tariffs on Canada would have significant consequences for both countries. Wilkinson asserts that these tariffs, which Trump has threatened to impose unless Canada addresses issues like illegal migration and drug smuggling, would result in a 75-cent per gallon increase in gasoline prices in the U.S. Midwest.
This price hike, he argues, would directly contradict Trump's campaign promises of lower fuel costs. Instead of engaging in a tariff war, Wilkinson proposes the establishment of a Canada-U.S. energy and mineral alliance to boost North American production and reduce reliance on countries like Russia and China for critical resources. He highlights Canada's crucial role in providing energy and minerals to the United States, noting that Canadian uranium powers nearly 20 million U.S. homes and electricity from several Canadian provinces powers over six million American homes – more than every home in Ohio. Wilkinson underscores that Canada is a major customer for U.S. goods, with 36 U.S. states relying on Canada as their primary export market. He also emphasizes that Canadian consumers and businesses purchase more from the United States than from China, Japan, and Germany combined. Wilkinson dismisses Trump's complaints about a trade imbalance, pointing out that excluding energy sales, the U.S. enjoys a trade surplus with Canada of over U.S.$50 billion. He further explains that Canada supplies over 4 million barrels of oil daily to the U.S., with Midwest refineries lacking viable alternatives. For natural gas, Canadian supplies are essential in regions like the Pacific Northwest and California. Wilkinson warns that imposing tariffs on Canadian critical minerals would force the U.S. to rely on undemocratic regimes with strained relations with Washington. Canada, he stresses, is the largest supplier of potash, a key fertilizer ingredient, and its uranium reduces U.S. dependence on less reliable producers like Russia. For other critical minerals such as germanium, zinc, nickel, copper, and graphite, the U.S. would be left with China as the primary alternative if Canada's supply is disrupted
