Action needed to deal with fertilizer and supply chain issues in Canada.Ottawa—To ease global food shortages, Canada should help Ukraine export grain stocks currently stuck in that country because of the Russian invasion, says the Commons agriculture committee.
The committee recommended Canada provide temporary grain storage facilities, ensure access to veterinary and phytosanitary inspection services, and provide demining equipment to clear the approximately 13 per cent of the country’s arable land that now is littered with mines or unexploded shells. As well, the government should consider ways to address bottlenecks in Canada’s food supply chain and ensure that Canadian farmers have the fertilizer they need to meet global food demand.
