Crane: Canada should make next-generation manufacturing a national priority, like U.S. and Germany cdnpoli (subs)
While next-generation manufacturing is a national priority in the United States and countries such as Germany, it so far has not been a clear priority for Canada. U.S. President Joe Biden, for example, highlighted U.S. manufacturing in his State of the Union speech last week. Germany has published its own industrial strategy, writes David Crane.
TORONTO—Without a much stronger and more innovative manufacturing industry, it’s hard to imagine a post-pandemic “Build Back Better” strategy that delivers good jobs and productivity gains to sustain and raise our standard of living. This has to be a priority. We still have to make things, based on our own proprietary technologies, for our own needs and for exports to the rest of the world. And we must do this at a game-changing time for technology, innovation, and competition.
