At a Friday morning news conference which introduced the 10 international team drivers who will compete in the inaugural Canada Sail Grand Prix in Halifax on Saturday and Sunday, the skippers exchanged barbs and traded friendly fire on the eve of the 11th event of the 13-race Sail GP season. As Sail GP’s fourth season winds down, the hostility seems to be heating up. And Canadian team driver Phil Robertson was front and centre during a lively, hour-long meet and greet.

No one seemed immune from the constant shots across the bow. The news conference was like a tamer comedy roast. Sail Grand Prix teams from Spain, Denmark, Germany and the United States hit the waters of Halifax Harbour during a practice session Friday. - SailGP “In my humble opinion, you want to keep experience on teams,” Robertson said. “They walked away when ownership changed. It probably was a mistake not to fight for them.”

“This is what it’s all about – racing in cities, close to fans in a small tight venue,” said the New Zealand-born Robertson. “Anything that’s happening on the leeward side you have no idea, you have no vision. You can’t see through the wing, you can’t see through the jib. The strategists will have to go to the centre of the boat and be our eyes.”“It’s mint out there,” Burling said. “It’ll be a beautiful weekend.”
