Canada's women's soccer team begins a new era with coach Casey Stoney at the helm at the Pinatar Cup in Spain. The team faces China, Mexico, and Taiwan, aiming to establish a fresh identity and prepare for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Canada's sixth-ranked women's soccer team embarks on a new era under the leadership of coach Casey Stoney in Spain this week. The team's inaugural match at the Pinatar Cup pits them against No. 17 China on Wednesday. Subsequent encounters include a clash with No. 31 Mexico on Saturday and a match against No. 42 Taiwan next Tuesday. All three games will unfold at the Pinatar Arena in Murcia.

Stoney's arrival comes after a tumultuous period for the Canadian women's team, marked by a labor dispute with Canada Soccer and the fallout from the drone-spying scandal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While acknowledging the challenges, Stoney is focused on setting a new course. 'My message is about turning the page, moving forward, being open-minded to the new ideas that we're going to bring to the team,' she stated during a virtual press conference. 'And about focusing from this day onward and what it takes to prepare to win a World Cup.'Stoney, with her prior experience coaching Manchester United women and the NWSL's San Diego Wave, aims to infuse the team with a fresh perspective. 'I think it's important there is an element of change. I think the players need to feel change,' she asserted. 'So you will definitely see a slightly different identity (Wednesday).' However, Stoney emphasizes that the changes will be gradual, allowing for a steady integration over time. The team's schedule is packed, but Stoney has already implemented 'a few tweaks.' 'You don't try and change too much too soon,' she explained. 'I think it takes a lot of time to embed the information. And we've got the luxury of having a year this year with no competitive games so we're going to take that year to try and change certain things and tweak certain things.'The Canadian squad boasts a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers. Captain Jessie Fleming, Kailen Sheridan, Vanessa Gilles, Ashley Lawrence, Shelina Zadorsky, Julia Grosso, Jordyn Huitema, Adriana Leon, and Nichelle Prince are among the familiar faces. The team also includes 24-year-old Samantha Chang and 25-year-old Emma Regan, both hailing from the new Northern Super League and Denmark's HB Koge. Janine Beckie, now known as Janine Sonis after her marriage, adds her experience to the lineup. The Pinatar Cup provides a valuable platform for Canada to test its mettle and refine its strategies before the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. The tournament's history includes victories by Scotland, Belgium, Iceland, and Finland, demonstrating the competitive nature of the event
