Canada's rent assistance program has been a disaster. We need a new rent-relief bridge via fpcomment

According to a July survey from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business , one in three businesses says rent relief remains a critical missing piece for their recovery.

Not all businesses are so lucky. Another small-business owner copied us on his letter to the government, which said: “We are a very small family-run store that employs about 25 people in Vancouver. My family has been involved in our business for over 110 years. We have survived two world wars, the Spanish flu, the Depression, and countless ups and downs. Our business is victim to an offshore landlord who is not interested in engaging with CECRA.

Provincial and federal finance ministers could work together to fix CECRA by establishing an alternative way to get rent relief money directly to tenants who need it. Or the government could expand the forgivable portion of the popular Canada Emergency Business Account.
