Upon his return from Japan, the jet\u002Dlagged judo boss was wide awake and earnest about his team.

“In the conditions we were in all year in terms of training and competition, all the challenges we’ve faced, generally speaking, were quite good results,” said Judo Canada chief executive officer and high performance director Nicolas Gill. “Obviously, athletes competing for bronze are not happy, they are hoping for more. Every time you lose a fight, it leaves a bitter taste.”

The 24-year-old was ranked No. 1 going into the Budokan crucible, and the Whitby, Ont., resident was banking on golden results. “I’m just happy that I was able to collect myself after that loss and come away with a medal. It was hard to put that semifinal behind me,” Klimkait told reporters in Tokyo. “But I realized if I didn’t, I would maybe sabotage my chance of being on the podium at all.”
