With millions facing food insecurity and vast amounts of edible food going to waste, Lori Nikkel, CEO of Second Harvest, proposes food rescue as a win-win solution. She outlines how government initiatives, business practices, and public awareness can help redirect surplus food to those in need and mitigate food waste.
Canadians will head to the polls this year to choose our next leader. On the long list of challenges the incoming government must address, affordability is sure to be top of mind and, along with it, Canadians’ ability—or inability—to access good, healthy food. As the CEO of Canada’s largest food rescue organization, I can confidently say: We don’t have a shortage of food in our country—we have a shortage of strategies to get it to the people who need it most.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada could take the lead by raising awareness on food rescue as a viable option for harvest overages and produce that does not meet cosmetic standards for retail. By partnering with farmers and producers, food rescue organizations like Second Harvest have kept millions of pounds of crooked carrots and oddly-shaped tomatoes from going to waste, redirecting them to feed people instead.
