BREAKING: 🇨🇦 Andre De Grasse has won 🥉 in the men’s 100-metre race at the Tokyo Olympics finishing with a 9.89 in the final.

It is the first medal won by a Canadian male athlete in Tokyo and De Grasse's second Olympic medal in the event.

De Grasse ran a 9.98 out of Lane 6 Sunday morning to move on to the final after he posted a Heat 5 best time of 9.91 to earn a spot in the semifinal. The Ontario native now has four Olympics medals, earning bronze in the 100-metre race in Rio, as well as bronze in the men's 4x100-metre relay. De Grasse also won silver in the men's 200-metre event in 2016.

The last Canadian to win gold at the Olympics was Donovan Bailey in 1996. Bailey and Bruny Surin still hold the Canadian record in the 100-metre event with a time of 9.84. This is the first Summer Games without Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt who has won the 100-and 200-metre events in the past three Olympics.
