While locked in a supply chain crisis for much of the last two years, the global automotive industry – and Canada’s certainly not immune – has consistently failed to match production to demand during what should have been a post-pandemic recovery. In 2022, Canada’s auto market fell 9 percent below 2021 levels as tens of thousands of would-be buyers couldn’t get their hands on the vehicles they wanted.
Different automakers experienced the inventory crunch to different degrees at different times. Yet by the end of last year, a light at the end of the tunnel was beginning to blink. Fourth-quarter sales across Canada were better in 2022 than in 2021. Only 1 percent better, mind you. But better. It’s not a sign of growing demand; it’s simply the result of somewhat improved availability. Now we can pair the increase from the end of last year with an estimated 5-percent increase in the first-quarter of 2023. Some brands are beginning to build stock in their dealer network, some brands are decreasing wait times, some brands are simply eating into their vast order banks. One way or another, the Canadian automotive industry is delivering more cars now than they were a year ago.
More specifically, certain automakers are delivering way more vehicles this year than last year. And even more to the point, certain vehicles are cruising along at a far healthier rate of production and delivery.Which brands, and which vehicles have experienced the best bounce backs? Excluding Porsche and Ford and nameplates that mustered fewer than 1,000 first-quarter sales, these are the 10 hottest auto brands and 10 hottest vehicles in Canada to start 2023.How the tide has turned.
