Needless to say, the COVID-19 pandemic hasn't been particularly kind to auto sales. Via: drivingdotca autonews

Compared with the second-quarter of 2019, auto sales plunged by more than 250,000 vehicles in Canada during the same period in 2020. The auto industry, ravaged by the economic fall-out of COVID-19 and the complications of lockdowns across the country, has seen more than one-third of its sales disappear so far this year.

As a result, the top-selling auto brand in Canada through the first-half of 2020 is the very same auto brand that topped the podium at this stage of 2019. Many aspects of the sprawling auto industry have undergone generational changes over the span of only three months, but many stay the same. These were Canada’s 10 best-selling auto brands during the first-half of 2020, the most memorable phase for the industry in generations.

8. Nissan: 34,531, down 48 per centNissan’s aging product lineup is doing the brand no favours during a period in which consumers need to be lured in by enticing carrots. Nissan’s new Rogue, unveiled somewhat quietly online in June, can’t land at dealers soon enough. The Rogue is the brand’s best seller, but sales in Q2 were down 61 per cent.

5. Hyundai: 43,640, down 33 per centBy a slight margin — two-tenths of a percentage point — Hyundai has actually picked up market share in Canada so far this year. Hyundai’s strength in key growth sectors, particularly with its Kona, helped move the brand up to fifth place in overall brand rankings. At this stage of 2019, Hyundai sat outside the top five, trailing a Nissan brand that’s struggled more than most through the pandemic.
