Nearly six months since the launch of its special extended family program for people in Gaza, Canada has raised the initial cap on the number of applications it will accept, but has made no progress on actually getting Canadians' loved ones safely across the border into Egypt. After paying thousands of dollars in bribes to do so on their own, families say there should at least be the same support once they arrive in Canada that other groups have received.

published the policy, revealing that the program would be limited to the first 1,000 accepted applications, and would close after a year if that quota was not met. On Feb. 13, Miller told reporters that while Canada had not yet gotten people out of Gaza through the program, he remains “flexible” on the cap.

said that anyone who had submitted a crisis web form while still in Gaza and has since left will still be eligible for the program, and could receive a code. Additionally, those who have submitted an application with a code will continue to have their applications processed. Beyond the special measures—and not counted under the 5,000-person cap—Miller said that 448 temporary resident visas were approved between Oct.
