A chunk of the money is available to improve protection, not just repairs damages dikes and other infrastructure

The federal public safety minister, Bill Blair, made the announcement Monday at the University of B.C. following the fifth and final meeting of a joint B.C.-federal ministers’ committee on disaster response and climate resilience.

B.C. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth, the other co-chair of the committee, said the funding will be used to rebuild damaged public and private infrastructure, including road and flood works in municipalities and provincial highways.Article contentBoth levels of government have promised to build back better after the catastrophe to increase protection against floods and wildfires.

Asked to provide an example of build-back-better, Farnworth pointed to the Coquihalla Highway, where sections of the highway and bridges were washed away. He said bridges and culverts need to be rebuilt so they can handle more water.Article contentWhile funding is being provided for response and recovery of 2021’s floods and wildfires, how projects in the future will be funded to increase disaster protection, or how much will be available, is not clear.

Jason Lum, chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District, met Blair Monday with other municipal leaders.
