Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland is heading to Washington to try and avert a trade war with the incoming Trump administration. Canada is preparing to retaliate against any US tariffs with its own.

Canada 's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said Canada will be prepared to fight a trade war with the incoming Trump administration if the US imposes protectionist tariffs on Canadian goods. Freeland, who heads to Washington, D.C. next week to plead Canada ’s case, said Canada must demonstrate to the new administration that there will be “real consequences” for Americans if a trade war starts. She also highlighted that Mr.

Trump's office is the “most powerful one in the world” and that he is a “seasoned politician, but also a seasoned decision-maker”. Canada is readying a list of American goods that it would target with retaliatory tariffs — including orange juice, ceramics, and some steel products — as part of a targeted response should Mr. Trump proceed with his tariff threat. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce estimates that if Mr. Trump proceeds with his pledged tariffs and Canada counters with retaliatory tariffs, the U.S. economy would shrink by 1.6 percent or US$467-billion, costing Americans approximately US$1,300 per person annually. Freeland's meeting takes place just after President-elect Trump threatened 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico unless they took action to stop illegal migration and drug smuggling into American territory. Canada subsequently announced $1.3 billion in new border spending over six years. On Tuesday, Trump suggested Canada’s measures have not satisfied him and said tariffs are coming. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced he will lead a delegation of Canadian premiers to visit Washington on February 12 to advocate for maintaining strong Canada-U.S. relations
