For the first time in a quarter century, Canada’s men’s Olympic team will almost certainly advance to play in the quarter-finals
Canada's #04 Jamal Murray and teammates celebrate at the end of the men's preliminary round group A basketball match between Canada and Australia during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, northern France, on July 30, 2024.For the first time in a quarter century, a Canadian men’s basketball is virtually assured of qualification to the knockout rounds of the Olympics.
Canada’s highly touted squad beat Australia 93-83 on Tuesday. It was close for much of the game, but Canada’s depth of star power showed in the end. They have now won their first two games. They are the only team in Group A to do so. There is still a mathematical possibility they miss qualification, but it is insignificant.
Australia came out with a game plan on Tuesday — play Aussie Rules instead of basketball. Moving screens, kamikaze picks, full-on body tackles. All the dark arts of international basketball were on display. This is the drawback to having so many young NBAers on the roster. Canada isn’t accustomed to playing a game where the referees are only inclined to call flying dropkicks.
Canada trailed at the half, but found its rhythm in the third quarter. They eased away in the fourth. Toronto Raptor R.J. Barrett was the game’s high scorer .Whether they win or lose, Canada will almost certainly advance to play in the quarter-finals. All four of those games will be played in Paris on Tuesday, August 6th.
