Canada suffered its second loss of qualify, dropping a 1\u002D0 decision in Panama City
Canada were looking to secure top spot in the final round of Concacaf qualifying and perhaps earn enough ranking points to find itself in Pot 3 at the World Cup draw Friday, which could mean a slightly easier group stage at the 32-team tournament starting Nov. 21.
Gabriel Torres scored the lone goal for Panama four minutes into the second half to give Panama the win and some consolation for missing out on the World Cup. Canada secured a spot at the World Cup for the first time since 1986 on Sunday with a 4-0 victory against Jamaica at BMO Field. Kone, 19, of CF Montreal, was making his first start, having made his international debut last week in a 1-0 loss in Costa Rica. Jonathan Osorio replaced Kone at the start of the second half.
Panama’s best chance came late, but Johnston made a goal-saving tackle to block the shot in front of Crepeau. After falling behind, Canada became more adventurous pushing forward, cognisant of Panama’s speed and ability to hit on the counter.Substitute Junior Hoilett played a fantastic ball to spring Cyle Larin down the left side. He bent a centring pass into the pass of David in the penalty area. David got a shot a shot off, but it was right at Mejia, who kicked it away.Article content
