Canada retaliates against U.S. tariffs with a 25% surtax on a range of American products, impacting both commercial and personal imports.
On February 4, 2025, Canada will impose a 25 percent surtax on certain goods imported from the United States , escalating tensions between the two countries. The retaliatory tariffs, announced by both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Donald Trump, will impact a wide range of products, including consumer goods, commercial shipments, and online purchases.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed that the surtax will apply to goods imported for both commercial and personal purposes, regardless of their origin. Even if goods are exported from a country other than the U.S. into Canada, they will be subject to the 25 percent tariff if they are ultimately sourced from the U.S. Targeted American goods encompass a diverse range of products, including orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, and pulp and paper. The CBSA clarified that the retaliatory measures will encompass goods imported to Canada by mail or courier, as well as goods imported by individual travellers exceeding their personal exemptions. This means cross-border shoppers and online buyers from the U.S. could face increased costs due to the tariffs.
