Canada will play an exhibition game against Bahrain on Nov. 11 with mainly MLS players, some who have been off since early October.
“This camp was designed for those players to have a competitive international match, and a period in desert conditions to acclimate, and to see where the players are at,” Herdman said in a conference call on Wednesday. “We’ve been monitoring and tracking players and their own individual programs and daily training environments.
The eight CF Montreal players invited to camp last played on Oct. 23, when they were eliminated in the conference semifinal by New York City FC. Canada will then play Croatia at Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan on Nov. 23, and conclude its Group F schedule against Morocco at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha on Dec. 1.
“I’ve got 26 players in mind,” Herdman said. “There is a group of staff that have been working diligently over the last four months compiling all the permutations of what 26 players might look like and what we need. But there’s a reality check, every single week there are changes. The World Cup rosters have been expanded from 23 to 26 players for this year’s tournament in Qatar, which was pushed back to November due to the extreme heat in the Middle Eastern country during the summer months when the event usually takes place. The European club seasons are taking a break allowing its players to participate in the World Cup.
