Canada eyes mid-August to open borders for vaccinated Americans, September for all countries
The Canadian government has barred many travellers, including tourists, from entering the country since March 2020. Trudeau’s insistence on maintaining travel restrictions along the U.S.-Canada border has resulted in criticism from business leaders and U.S. lawmakers, but it has support among Canadians, according to recent surveys.
“As we have been every step of the way, we are going to be cautious and responsible and take things step-by-step,” the prime minister told reporters Wednesday during a campaign-style appearance at a wind turbine factory in Gaspe, Quebec.Article content Trudeau is expected to call an election this summer in the hopes of regaining a majority in the nation’s legislature. New polling data suggests that Canadians broadly support their leader’s cautious approach to the border.
In a survey published earlier Thursday by the Angus Reid Institute, 69 per cent of respondents said they want the travel ban to remain in place until 75 per cent of Canadians are fully vaccinated. About half said the prime minister was doing a good job handling the pandemic, his highest rating since January.
