Once again Canada will have to manage the unpredictability of Donald Trump as returns to power in the new year after being projected the winner of the U.S. presidential election in the early morning hours of Nov. 6. In what was expected to be a toss-up against Democratic nominee and Vice-President Kamala Harris, Trump flipped crucial swing states in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Georgia.
Last week, Liberal MP John McKay , a co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Interparliamentary Group, told his contacts in Democratic circles were expressing “extreme apprehension of yet another four years of unmitigated chaos.” He said that, regardless of the result, Canada needs a “continuous upping of its game” in relations with the U.S., whether being present at legislator conferences, improving business ties, or preparing for the coming Canada-United States-Mexico negotiations in July 2025.
